About Sqwá (Skwah) First Nation
Sqwá First Nation is one of the largest First Nation Communities in the greater Stó:lō area. We are Pilalt, with a vast territory from Semá:th (Sumas) to Spuzzum, that overlaps our neighboring First Nations, and is affirmed by our inherent rights and title that have never been extinguished.
While our current main village of Sqwá sits just up from historic Chilliwack landing, one of our original village sites is where 5 corners in downtown Chilliwack now exists. Some of our other village sites remain occupied by the descendants of our first people, whose oral history is recounted by them, in the traditional way of our ancestors.
Sqwá First Nation is a vibrant community, with 238 of the over 700 members living within its borders. There are a variety of private and public enterprises such as the famous Greg Moore Raceway which holds Kart racing on weekends throughout the year weather permitting. We also feature a mix of agricultural and residential land and it is not uncommon to see someone riding horseback through the community.
Chilliwack Landing Preschool has been teaching children from the community and surrounding areas for over 33 years, fostering the values of self-worth & self-preservation through the cultural connection within our children’s family traditions, elder teachings and community involvement. Our curriculum is focused on ensuring our young children reach their full potential through outstanding care and educational programming. We are an accredited school open to the community of Chilliwack and Sardis.
A great source of pride for Skwah First Nation is the River Spirit Canoe Club. Started and run by the Williams family, members compete and win regularly throughout BC and the northwestern United States. They also work closely with McCammon School where students are introduced to traditional First Nations cultural teaching and experiences.
Sqwá First Nation holds 3 additional reserves; Skwáli which is situated across the Hope slough, Skwahla which sits along the Hope slough at the base of Little Mountain, and Schelowat, mainly agricultural land surrounded by the community of Rosedale. Sqwá First Nation also shares Grass Indian Reserve, Pekw’Xe:yles, and Skumalasph with other local First Nations.
